Yes, an RPL assessment can sometimes be completed remotely or online. You may be able to submit evidence digitally and speak with an assessor by phone or video. Whether the entire assessment can happen remotely depends on the qualification, the skills you need to demonstrate and the registered training organisation (RTO) conducting the assessment.
That distinction matters. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) assesses skills and knowledge you already have, regardless of how you gained them. It is not simply an online application where uploading a résumé leads to a qualification. An RTO assessor must decide whether your evidence meets the requirements of the relevant units of competency.
Many steps are well suited to remote delivery. An RTO may allow you to upload documents, answer written questions or discuss your work with an assessor over video. The particular process is set by the RTO, so ask how it handles remote assessment before you start collecting evidence.

Digital submission can be convenient if you work shifts, live in a regional area or have experience across several workplaces. Convenience, however, does not remove the need for a thorough assessment.
Some competencies require you to demonstrate practical skills in a suitable environment. An assessor may need to observe you performing tasks, inspect equipment or confirm that work was completed under the right conditions. Depending on the unit and the RTO’s assessment approach, this could involve a workplace visit or another supervised practical assessment.
Do not assume that a video will always replace direct observation. The RTO must assess against the requirements of each relevant unit. You can look up qualifications, units and their assessment requirements on the Australian Government’s training.gov.au register. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) provides information about the standards that apply to nationally recognised training and assessment.
Start with evidence that shows what you did, not just where you worked. Useful material may include job descriptions, completed work documents, de-identified project records, licences or training records, and contact details for people who can confirm your work. The most useful evidence will depend on the qualification and your employment history.
Before uploading workplace material, check that you have permission to share it. Remove customer details and other confidential information where appropriate, while retaining enough context for the assessor to understand the work. If you no longer have access to old records, tell the RTO. It can explain whether other evidence or further assessment activities may be suitable.
An assessor needs to be confident that evidence is relevant to the unit, genuinely yours, current enough to reflect your skills and sufficient to support a decision. A strong collection of documents may help, but it does not automatically mean every unit can be assessed without a practical task or further questions.
The RTO conducting the RPL assessment decides how it will gather and assess evidence and whether you have demonstrated competency. If you are found competent and meet the applicable requirements, the RTO—not an RPL support service—issues the relevant nationally recognised certification.
