Running a business teaches skills that don't always come with a formal certificate attached — budgeting, staff supervision, project coordination, compliance management, and more. A common question we hear from self-employed people and small business owners is whether this hands-on experience can be used towards a nationally recognised qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The short answer is: often yes, but it depends on how well that experience can be evidenced against the specific requirements of a qualification.
RPL is a form of assessment offered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that allows a person's existing skills and knowledge — regardless of where they were gained — to be assessed against the units of competency in a nationally recognised qualification listed on training.gov.au. This means experience gained while running a business can, in principle, be just as valid as experience gained as an employee, provided it's relevant and can be demonstrated with evidence.
It's important to understand that RPL does not hand out qualifications automatically. The RTO's qualified assessors make the final judgement, based on the evidence provided, about whether a person meets the required standard. No amount of business experience guarantees a particular outcome — the assessment process determines this on a case-by-case basis.
Depending on the qualification being pursued, an RTO assessor may consider evidence such as:
For example, someone who has run a small building or trades business for several years may have practical experience that aligns with units in a construction or business management qualification. Similarly, someone operating a retail or hospitality business may have relevant experience for qualifications in those industries.
Because business owners often don't have formal supervisor sign-offs or payslips in the same way employees do, evidence becomes especially important. RTOs may accept a combination of documents such as:
The stronger and more specific the evidence, the easier it is for an assessor to map it against the qualification requirements.
At RPL Access, we help business owners understand which of their experiences might be relevant to a chosen qualification and how to organise supporting evidence clearly before it goes to an RTO for assessment. We do not assess applications ourselves, issue certificates, or make licensing decisions — those steps remain the responsibility of the RTO and any relevant licensing body. Our role is purely to support you in preparing a clear, well-organised RPL application.
If you're a business owner wondering whether your experience could count towards a qualification, exploring the RPL pathways available is a useful starting point, or you can start an RPL check to get a clearer picture of your options.
