Yes. Commercial work can be useful evidence for recognition of prior learning (RPL), whether you created content as an employee, freelancer or business owner. A paid project does not automatically qualify you for a certificate, though. The question is whether your work demonstrates the skills and knowledge required by the particular units of competency you are seeking.
RPL is an assessment pathway that considers skills and knowledge gained through work and other experience. For a content creator, relevant work might include planning campaigns, writing copy, producing video or audio, managing social media, designing digital assets, analysing performance or working with clients. Which activities matter depends on the qualification and units being assessed, not on your job title or follower count.
Start by checking the units and their requirements on the Australian Government’s training.gov.au register. The relevant registered training organisation (RTO) assesses your evidence against those requirements and decides whether it is sufficient. RPL Access can help you understand an RPL pathway and prepare for an evidence discussion, but it does not conduct the RTO’s assessment or issue certificates.
A strong submission usually explains both what you produced and how you worked. Depending on the unit requirements, useful evidence may include:
You do not need to submit every file you have ever created. A smaller, well-explained selection may make it easier for an assessor to see which requirements your evidence addresses.
Commercial content is often collaborative. A campaign might involve a strategist, writer, designer, editor and account manager. If you submit the final result without explaining your role, the assessor may not be able to tell which skills were yours.
For each example, note the client or project type, approximate date, brief, your responsibilities, tools or methods used, decisions you made and the outcome. If the work was completed by a team, identify the parts you completed yourself. Where possible, include supporting drafts or a statement from someone who directly observed your work. Be accurate: claiming credit for another person’s contribution can undermine the reliability of your evidence.
Check your contract and obtain permission before sharing unpublished or confidential client material. Public availability does not necessarily give you permission to disclose private briefs, customer data, account access or performance reports. You may be able to redact names and sensitive figures, provide a permitted excerpt, or ask a client to confirm your contribution without revealing protected information. Discuss acceptable alternatives with the RTO before submitting material you are unsure about.
A portfolio can be a helpful starting point, but it may not show when the work was done, whether you created it independently, or how it meets every relevant unit requirement. A social profile may show published output while revealing little about research, planning, client consultation, revisions or evaluation. An assessor may seek further documents, ask questions or use another assessment method to confirm your skills.
The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) is the national regulator for vocational education and training providers. The RTO, rather than an adviser or a client, is responsible for its assessment decisions and for issuing any qualification or statement of attainment. Commercial success, years in business and a large audience do not replace that assessment.
