Yes, education support workers can apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL). If you have developed relevant skills through paid work, volunteering or previous training, an RTO may be able to assess those skills against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. Applying does not mean you will automatically receive a qualification: the outcome depends on the evidence you provide and the RTO’s assessment.
RPL is an assessment process that considers what you already know and can do, regardless of how you learned it. For an education support worker, that might include experience assisting teachers, supporting students’ learning, following classroom plans and contributing to a safe, inclusive learning environment.
The RTO assesses your evidence against the requirements of the relevant units of competency. You can look up current qualifications and their unit requirements on the Australian Government’s training.gov.au register. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) provides information about how RPL fits within nationally recognised training.
Two qualifications an education support worker may wish to discuss with an RTO are the Certificate III in School Based Education Support and the Certificate IV in School Based Education Support. They have different requirements, so the right option depends on your duties, experience and goals—not simply how long you have worked in a school.
For example, experience following a teacher’s instructions and supporting routine classroom activities may provide different evidence from experience supporting more complex learning needs. An RTO must check the specific qualification and units you are seeking before advising what can be assessed through RPL.
Relevant experience may come from paid education support roles, teacher aide work, appropriate volunteering or previous study. Depending on the units being assessed, you might draw on work that involved:
These are examples, not a checklist that guarantees RPL. An RTO will consider whether your evidence meets the requirements of each unit, including whether your skills are current and whether you can demonstrate them consistently.
Start with documents that show what you personally did, when you did it and who can confirm your work. Useful evidence may include a current résumé, position descriptions, employment records, relevant training records and statements from a supervising teacher or manager. An RTO may also request an interview, practical demonstration, workplace observation or other assessment evidence.
Work samples can be helpful, but take care with student information. Remove identifying details where appropriate, follow your school’s confidentiality rules and seek permission before sharing documents you do not own. A description of your contribution, confirmed by a supervisor, may be more suitable than sending an unredacted student record.
Quality matters more than the size of your folder. A clear example of how you supported a learning activity, together with confirmation from someone who observed your work, may tell an assessor more than a large collection of unrelated documents.
You may receive recognition for some units but not others. If there are gaps, the RTO can explain the available next steps. Only an RTO can assess competency and issue a nationally recognised qualification or statement of attainment.
No. RPL assessment is separate from employment requirements, including applicable working with children checks and school policies. The relevant state or territory authority and employer determine those requirements. Likewise, any visa or migration decision belongs to the responsible government authority; an RPL assessment does not determine that outcome.
Write down the tasks you perform regularly, the students and staff you support, and the evidence you can safely obtain. If you are unsure how your experience relates to a qualification, RPL Access Australia can help you explore a potential pathway and prepare to discuss your evidence with an RTO. The RTO—not RPL Access Australia—makes the assessment decision and issues any resulting certification.
