A formal RPL assessment, however, needs a specific qualification and its units of competency so an assessor knows what to assess your evidence against.

What can you do before choosing a qualification?

Start with the work you have actually done, rather than a qualification title that sounds appealing. Write down your roles, responsibilities, tools, tasks and any training you have completed. Think about work you can demonstrate, not just the number of years you have been employed.

Next, compare that experience with relevant Australian qualifications. The national training.gov.au register is a starting point for checking qualification details, including units of competency and registered training organisations (RTOs). Qualification names can sound similar while covering different skills, so the units matter.

You can also ask an RPL support service to help you explore possible options and organise an initial evidence list. That early enquiry is not the same as lodging a formal RPL application with an RTO, and it does not establish that you will receive credit.

Why does the qualification need to be chosen for assessment?
