Can managers gain business qualifications through RPL?

· 3 min read

Many Australian managers build strong leadership and business skills on the job, without ever completing a formal qualification. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) offers a pathway for these managers to have their existing skills and knowledge assessed against a nationally recognised qualification, without necessarily repeating training they have already effectively learned through work experience.

What is RPL, and how does it apply to business qualifications?

RPL is an assessment process used by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to determine whether a person's existing skills, knowledge and experience meet the requirements of a specific unit of competency or qualification listed on the national training register, training.gov.au. Qualifications are structured according to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), which sets the level and complexity of learning outcomes expected at each qualification level.

For managers, the most commonly relevant qualifications sit within the Business Services (BSB) training package, such as the Diploma of Leadership and Management or the Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management. These qualifications are designed to reflect the kind of strategic, operational and people-management responsibilities many managers already carry out day to day.

Why RPL suits experienced managers

Managers often develop competencies through practical experience rather than structured study, including:

Where this experience can be substantiated with appropriate evidence, it may align with the learning outcomes of a business qualification. RPL allows this alignment to be assessed, rather than assuming a manager must start training from the beginning.

What evidence is generally required?

Every RTO sets its own evidence requirements, but managers are typically asked to provide a combination of documentation that demonstrates their skills and experience over time. This may include position descriptions, letters from employers or supervisors, examples of reports or plans they have authored, performance review records, and any relevant prior training. The strength and relevance of this evidence is central to whether an RPL assessment can proceed and what outcome it may lead to.

Understanding where RPL Access fits in

It's important to understand the different roles involved in this process. RPL Access provides support and advisory services to help managers understand RPL pathways, prepare their evidence, and connect with a suitable RTO. RPL Access does not assess evidence, determine outcomes, or issue qualifications. Assessment decisions and the issuing of any certification are made solely by the RTO responsible for the qualification, in line with its obligations under the AQF and national training standards. No outcome, approval, or timeframe can be guaranteed in advance.

Getting started

Managers considering this pathway may find it useful to first explore the range of qualifications and industries covered through RPL pathways, or read further guidance on the RPL Access blog. For those ready to explore their own situation, starting with a RPL check can help clarify what evidence might be relevant before engaging with an RTO. You can also learn more about how the service works via the About page, or get in touch directly through the Contact page with any questions.

Key takeaway

RPL does not guarantee a business qualification, but it does provide a legitimate, nationally recognised process through which experienced managers can have their existing skills formally assessed. With the right evidence and support, this can be a practical alternative to undertaking a full course of study from scratch.
