If you've been working in a trade for years without formal papers, you've probably wondered whether Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can help you get an Australian trade licence. It's a fair question — and the honest answer is that RPL doesn't issue licences at all. It's a pathway that can help you obtain a nationally recognised qualification, which is often one of the requirements a state or territory licensing authority asks for.
RPL is an assessment approach used by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to evaluate the skills and knowledge you've already gained through work experience, informal training, or previous study. Instead of sitting through a full course, you provide evidence — such as job references, photos of completed work, safety certificates, or supervisor statements — that demonstrates you already meet the requirements of a qualification listed on the national training register, training.gov.au.
Only an RTO can assess this evidence and decide whether to issue the qualification. That responsibility sits solely with the training provider.
In most Australian states and territories, trade licensing (for example, for electricians, plumbers, builders, or refrigeration mechanics) is managed by a separate state-based regulator, such as a building or fair trading authority. These bodies typically require applicants to hold a specific nationally recognised qualification — often a Certificate III — before they'll even consider a licence application. Some trades also require evidence of supervised experience, a trade test, or additional compliance checks depending on the licensing authority's own rules.
This means RPL can potentially help with one part of the puzzle: obtaining the qualification. It cannot influence, guarantee, or speed up the separate decision made by the licensing body. Each regulator sets its own criteria, and it's essential to check these directly before assuming a qualification alone will be enough.
