Yes. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) can recognise skills you developed on the job, even if you never learned them in a classroom. What matters is whether a registered training organisation (RTO) can assess your existing knowledge and skills against the requirements of the relevant qualification or units of competency.
That does not mean work experience automatically becomes a certificate. You need to show what you can do, and an RTO must make the assessment decision.
People learn through everyday work: solving problems, using equipment, supervising others, following procedures and adapting when a job does not go to plan. RPL is a way for an RTO to assess learning gained through experience, regardless of whether it came from formal training, informal learning or work.
The assessment is made against specific requirements, not just your job title or years of service. You can look up Australian qualifications and units of competency on the official National Register of VET. The units can help you see which tasks, knowledge and performance requirements may be relevant to your experience.
A useful RPL application connects your experience to the skills being assessed. Depending on the qualification and the RTO's assessment process, relevant evidence might include:
A certificate of employment on its own may show where you worked, but not necessarily whether you can perform every required task. Similarly, a large collection of documents is not automatically strong evidence. Clear examples that show what you did, how you did it and when you did it are usually more helpful than documents with no explanation.
Protect confidential information before sharing workplace records. Ask your employer or clients for permission where needed, and check with the RTO about acceptable ways to provide redacted or alternative evidence.
You may still be able to pursue RPL. Tell the RTO what work you have done and ask how its assessor can evaluate skills that are difficult to document. Depending on the requirements, an assessor may use a practical demonstration, a conversation about your work, questions about why you made particular decisions or a statement from someone familiar with your work.
Be specific. Rather than saying, ‘I have managed teams for years,’ describe the size of the teams, the tasks you allocated, how you dealt with problems and what records or witnesses could support your account. The RTO decides whether the available evidence is sufficient and whether further assessment is needed.
It can be possible to receive RPL for some or all of the units in a qualification, but the result depends on the qualification requirements and the RTO's assessment. You may have substantial experience in one part of a role but still need to demonstrate skills or knowledge covered by other units. If there are gaps, the RTO can explain what additional evidence, assessment or training may be required.
RPL also does not replace a licence, registration or other legal permission to perform regulated work. A qualification and an occupational licence are different things. If your goal is a licensed occupation, check the current requirements with the relevant state or territory licensing authority. Likewise, an RPL outcome does not decide eligibility for a visa or a migration skills assessment; those decisions belong to the relevant authorities.
Start by writing down the work you actually perform, including tasks you handle independently and problems you have solved. Compare that experience with the relevant qualification and units on the National Register, then collect a few strong examples you are permitted to share.
If you are unsure which experience may be relevant, RPL Access Australia can help you understand possible pathways and prepare for a conversation about evidence. The RTO—not RPL Access—assesses your skills and decides whether to grant RPL or issue a qualification. An initial discussion can help you ask better questions before committing to an assessment, without assuming a particular result.
