If you have years of practical experience but need a formal qualification for work in Western Australia, recognition of prior learning (RPL) may be worth exploring. The important distinction is that RPL can support a licensing application; it cannot grant a licence.
Whether it helps depends on the occupation, the qualification required and the rules set by the relevant WA licensing authority. Start by checking the current requirements for your occupation through the Western Australian Government.
RPL is an assessment process that considers skills and knowledge you have already gained through work, training or other experience. A registered training organisation (RTO) assesses your evidence against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification or units of competency. If you meet those requirements, the RTO may issue the relevant qualification or statement of attainment.
That outcome may be useful where a licensing authority requires, or accepts, a particular qualification or unit. It is only one possible part of the application. The authority—not the RTO or an RPL adviser—decides whether you meet its licensing requirements.
RPL Access Australia can help you understand a potential RPL pathway and prepare evidence for assessment. The RTO conducts the assessment and decides whether to issue a training outcome. The licensing authority makes the separate licensing decision.
Do not assume that a qualification commonly associated with your trade is the one your WA licence application needs. Requirements can differ between occupations, licence classes and types of work. They may also change. Before starting RPL, confirm:
You can use the official training.gov.au register to check qualification and unit details and whether an RTO has the relevant qualification or units on its scope of registration. Check licensing eligibility separately with the WA authority; an RTO’s scope does not establish that a qualification satisfies a particular licence requirement.
Useful evidence depends on the qualification and your work history. An RTO might consider employment records, job descriptions, work samples, project records, photographs of completed work, training records and statements from supervisors or clients. It may also use an interview, practical demonstration or other assessment activities to confirm what you can currently do.
Evidence needs to be relevant to the units being assessed and sufficient for the RTO to make a sound decision. A long employment history alone may not demonstrate every required skill. If there are gaps, the RTO may explain what further evidence, assessment or training is needed. RPL is not an automatic exchange of years worked for a certificate.
No. Even if an RTO issues the qualification you sought, the licensing authority may have other requirements. These could include documented experience, an examination, identity checks or conditions specific to the licence class. Only the relevant authority can assess your application and decide whether to issue a licence.
The same separation applies if you are considering work across state borders. A qualification and a licence are different documents, and an existing interstate licence does not automatically answer every WA eligibility question. Ask the WA authority which recognition or application process applies to your circumstances.
If your plans also involve migration, treat that as another separate process. An RPL outcome does not determine a skills assessment, visa eligibility or a migration decision.
First, identify the work you want to perform and the WA licence class it requires. Check the current criteria with the licensing authority, then confirm the exact qualification or units you may need. Only after that should you explore whether your experience could be assessed through an appropriately registered RTO.
RPL can be a practical way to have existing skills assessed rather than repeating learning you have already completed. Its value for licensing, though, depends on choosing the right pathway and understanding who makes each decision.
