If you have spent years setting up equipment, recording measurements and supporting field surveys, you may wonder whether that experience can count towards a qualification. The answer is potentially, yes. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) gives you a way to have existing skills and knowledge assessed against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It is not an automatic exchange of years worked for a certificate.
RPL is an assessment process conducted by a registered training organisation (RTO). An assessor looks at what you already know and can do, then compares that evidence with the relevant units of competency. Depending on the assessment, you may receive credit for particular units, meet the requirements for a whole qualification, or need further evidence or training to address gaps.
The starting point is to identify a qualification that matches your actual work, rather than choosing one solely because its title sounds familiar. Surveying and spatial information qualifications and their current requirements can be checked on the Australian Government’s national training register. An RTO can then explain which qualification and units it is approved to assess and whether your experience is relevant to them.
Survey assistant roles vary. One person may spend most days helping with construction set-out; another may support topographic surveys, collect spatial data or help process field observations. Relevant work could include:
These examples are not a checklist that guarantees RPL. The assessor needs to establish that your evidence is authentic, current, sufficient and relevant to the specific units being assessed. Assisting with a task does not necessarily demonstrate that you can perform every part of it to the required standard.
Start with work you can explain clearly: what the project involved, what you personally did, which equipment or software you used, and how your work was checked. Depending on the RTO’s requirements, useful evidence may include:
Ask your employer before sharing project material. Remove client details and other confidential information where required. If you do not have documents for every task, tell the RTO what you can demonstrate: assessment may also involve an interview, practical observation or other methods chosen by the assessor. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) provides information about standards and oversight for vocational education and training providers.
No. A vocational qualification and professional registration or licensing are separate matters. Requirements for cadastral or other regulated surveying work depend on the relevant state or territory authority. An RTO decides whether you meet the requirements for units or a qualification and issues any resulting certification. A licensing body makes its own decisions about registration or authority to practise.
Likewise, completing RPL does not itself establish eligibility for a visa or a migration skills assessment. Those decisions sit with the relevant government department or assessing authority under its own rules. If registration or migration is your goal, check the applicable requirements before deciding which qualification to pursue.
Write down the surveying tasks you perform independently, those you carry out under supervision and the evidence you can safely provide. Then compare your experience with a current qualification and speak with an RTO about its assessment requirements.
