If you have spent years leading walking tours, explaining local history or managing group safety, you may have developed skills that count towards a formal qualification. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) gives experienced tour guides a way to have those skills assessed against the requirements of a nationally recognised training product. It is not an automatic certificate: a registered training organisation (RTO) must assess your evidence and decide whether it meets the relevant requirements.
RPL is an assessment process that considers skills and knowledge gained through work, volunteering, informal learning and previous training. For a guide, that might include planning itineraries, presenting information, responding to unexpected changes, communicating with diverse visitors and applying workplace safety procedures.
The first step is to identify a suitable qualification or set of units. Guiding qualifications and their current requirements can be checked on the Australian Government's training.gov.au register. The right option depends on the work you actually do—not simply your job title. A nature guide, city walking-tour guide and specialist cultural guide may have different experience to present.
An RTO then compares your evidence with the units you are seeking. It may review documents, ask questions, contact referees or arrange a practical demonstration. If your evidence does not cover every requirement, the RTO can explain what further assessment or training is needed. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) regulates RTOs; the RTO, not an RPL support service, makes the assessment decision and issues any resulting qualification or statement of attainment.

Protect visitor privacy and confidential business information. Remove personal details where appropriate, and ask before sharing an employer's documents. A certificate of attendance, a job description or a general reference may help provide context, but it may not, by itself, demonstrate every skill the RTO needs to assess.
No. Years on the job can be valuable, but the assessor must establish that your skills and knowledge meet the current requirements of the relevant units. For example, you may be confident presenting a tour but have limited evidence of planning, risk management or other required tasks. You might receive recognition for some units and need additional evidence, assessment or training for others.
Before applying, compare the qualification with your day-to-day responsibilities. Make a list of the tasks you can demonstrate and the documents or people who can verify them. This makes it easier to spot gaps early and discuss realistic options with an RTO.
Not necessarily. A qualification and permission to conduct a tour are separate matters. Depending on where and how you work, a land manager, park authority, venue or other relevant body may require permits, approvals, inductions or particular competencies. Check the rules for each location and activity with the responsible authority. An RTO decides RPL outcomes; the relevant authority makes any permit or licensing decision. A qualification also does not determine a visa or migration outcome.

Ask a prospective RTO what evidence it needs, how assessment will work, what fees apply and what happens if gaps are identified.
