If a training provider says it is a registered training organisation (RTO), you do not have to take its word for it. Australia has a public national register where you can check the provider’s registration and what it is approved to deliver. It is a useful step before you enrol, pay a fee or begin a recognition of prior learning (RPL) application.
Start with training.gov.au, the Australian Government’s national register of vocational education and training. Search for the provider using its RTO code if you have one. You can also search by its name, although a trading name on a website may differ from the legal name shown on the register.
Open the provider’s record rather than relying on a search result or a screenshot supplied by the business. Check that the record identifies the organisation you are dealing with, then review its current registration status and the details displayed on the register. An old certificate, logo or advertisement is not a substitute for a current register check.
Ask the provider for its RTO code and compare it with the code on training.gov.au. Check the legal and trading names shown on the record against the provider’s website, enrolment documents and any agreement you have been given. Similar-sounding names are not enough: make sure you have found the right organisation.
Read the status displayed on the register. Do not assume that a provider remains registered because it was registered previously. If a status, date or condition is unclear, ask the provider to explain it and seek clarification from its listed regulator before making a decision.
Being registered does not mean an RTO can assess or issue every nationally recognised qualification. Look for the specific qualification or unit of competency you want in its scope of registration. Compare the code and title, not just a broad industry description: qualifications with similar names may be different products.
Scope can change. If you are considering RPL, check the relevant qualification with the RTO when you enquire and again before you commit, particularly if you have been relying on an older brochure or quote.
Some businesses help applicants understand RPL, organise evidence or connect with an RTO. That support is different from assessment. Ask which RTO would assess your application, obtain its RTO code and check its record and relevant scope on training.gov.au.
RPL Access Australia provides RPL support and guidance; the RTO is responsible for assessing evidence against the applicable requirements and, where the requirements are met, issuing the qualification or statement of attainment. Neither an adviser nor an RTO can promise that an application will succeed before the assessment has been completed.
No. A current registration check is an important starting point, but it does not tell you whether your evidence will meet RPL requirements, whether a qualification satisfies a particular occupational licence, or whether it meets visa or migration requirements. The relevant RTO makes assessment decisions. Licensing authorities decide licensing matters, and the responsible migration authorities decide visa matters.
If a provider makes claims about regulatory approval that you cannot reconcile with the national register, you can consult the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) for information about the national VET regulator. For a particular RTO, check which regulator is listed on its training.gov.au record; not every RTO is regulated by ASQA.
