Is RPL available through TAFE in Australia?

Yes, recognition of prior learning (RPL) is available through some TAFE providers in Australia. But it is not automatically available for every course, and having work experience does not automatically mean you will receive a qualification. The first step is to ask the TAFE provider whether it offers RPL for the specific qualification or units you have in mind.

How does RPL through TAFE work?

RPL is an assessment process that considers skills and knowledge you have already gained through work, previous study, volunteering or other relevant experience. A TAFE provider that is a registered training organisation (RTO) may assess that experience against the requirements of particular units of competency.

The assessor looks for evidence that you can meet the current requirements of those units. If the evidence is sufficient, the RTO may grant RPL for some or all of them. If there are gaps, you may need further evidence, training or assessment. You can check a qualification’s units and locate RTOs with the relevant training on the Australian Government’s National Register of VET.

Is RPL offered for every TAFE course?

No. RPL options depend on the provider, qualification, units and assessment requirements. A TAFE may offer RPL for a qualification without offering it in the same way for every unit. Some units have practical, workplace or regulatory requirements that an assessor must still check, regardless of how long you have worked in the field.

Can RPL Access help if you choose TAFE?

RPL Access provides RPL support and guidance, such as helping you understand a possible pathway and prepare to discuss your experience and evidence. It does not conduct a TAFE’s assessment or issue its certificates. If you want to apply through a particular TAFE, confirm that provider’s requirements directly; its RTO assessor decides whether you meet them.

A qualification obtained through RPL also does not, by itself, guarantee an occupational licence, registration or visa outcome. The relevant licensing authority or government decision-maker applies its own requirements and makes those decisions.

What should you ask before you commit?

Ask whether RPL is offered for your chosen qualification, which units can be assessed, what evidence is expected and what the full assessment cost may be. If your goal is a particular job, licence or further study, check those separate entry requirements too. That way, you can decide whether TAFE RPL is a suitable option before you apply.
