What is the difference between TAFE RPL and private RTO RPL?

· 4 min read

If you have skills from work, previous study or other experience, recognition of prior learning (RPL) may help you have those skills assessed against a nationally recognised qualification. But should you apply through TAFE or a private registered training organisation (RTO)?

The key point is that TAFE providers and private RTOs operate under the same national vocational education and training framework. The differences you notice are more likely to be in the qualifications they offer, their assessment process, fees and the support available to you.

Is TAFE RPL different from private RTO RPL?

RPL is an assessment process, not a separate type of qualification. An assessor considers what you already know and can do against the requirements of a particular qualification or unit of competency. You still need to provide enough relevant, current and authentic evidence to demonstrate your skills. If evidence does not cover every requirement, the provider may discuss further assessment or training.

TAFE institutes are public vocational education providers and may be registered training organisations. Private RTOs are independently operated training providers. Both must be appropriately registered to deliver and assess the qualification in question. You can check a provider’s registration and scope, along with qualification and unit details, on the Australian Government’s training.gov.au register.

What might be different in practice?

Qualifications and scope

Neither every TAFE nor every private RTO offers every qualification through RPL. Start with the exact qualification code, not just its name. Ask whether that qualification is on the provider’s current scope of registration and whether it accepts RPL applications for it. This matters if you need the qualification for a job, further study or a licensing application.

Evidence and assessment arrangements

One provider may ask you to upload documents through a portal; another may arrange an interview, practical observation or workplace verification. Assessors may request items such as work samples, job descriptions, licences, records of completed tasks or statements from supervisors. The evidence required depends on the qualification and your circumstances, not simply on whether the provider is TAFE or private.

Ask how the provider will identify gaps, how practical skills will be assessed and what happens if your first submission is insufficient. A promise of a certificate based only on years worked should make you cautious: experience is valuable, but it must be assessed against the applicable requirements.

Cost, availability and support

Fees and payment arrangements can vary between providers and qualifications. Eligibility for any subsidy also depends on the relevant government program and your circumstances; do not assume that TAFE is always cheaper or that private RPL is always faster. Request a written explanation of the total cost, what assessment is included, any extra charges and the provider’s refund terms before you commit.

It is also worth asking who will help you understand the evidence requirements and who will make the assessment decision. Those are different roles.

Which option is right for you?

A useful comparison starts with four questions:

If you need the result for an occupational licence, check requirements directly with the relevant state or territory licensing authority. A qualification does not automatically grant a licence. Likewise, a qualification or RPL outcome does not guarantee a skills assessment, visa or migration outcome; those decisions sit with the relevant authorities.

Getting help before you apply

RPL Access Australia can help you understand possible pathways and prepare to discuss your experience and evidence. It does not assess competency or issue certificates: those decisions belong to the RTO and its assessors. If you are weighing up providers, begin by checking the qualification and asking each RTO the same questions. A clear explanation of what you will need to demonstrate is more useful than a promise of an easy outcome.
