Will my qualification record show individual units completed by RPL?

If you complete individual units through recognition of prior learning (RPL), will your qualification record say so? The short answer is: it depends which record you mean. A qualification certificate, an RTO-issued record of results and a USI VET transcript serve different purposes and may show different levels of detail.

Will the qualification certificate identify RPL units?

Usually, the qualification certificate—also called a testamur—identifies the qualification awarded rather than explaining how you completed each unit. You should not assume it will list individual units or label any of them as RPL.

That does not mean RPL disappears from every record. An RTO may issue accompanying documentation that lists your units and results. The way RPL is displayed on that documentation can vary, so the most reliable approach is to ask the issuing RTO for an example or an explanation of its record format.

Which documents should I check?

Qualification certificate and record of results

When an RTO awards a full VET qualification, check both the certificate and any accompanying record of results. The record of results is where you would generally expect to find the individual units that make up the qualification. Whether it explicitly identifies a unit as completed through RPL depends on the document and the information the RTO displays.

If you need to confirm a particular unit, look for its unit code and title, not just the qualification name. Unit details can be checked on the Australian Government’s training.gov.au register. Unit codes matter because similarly named units are not necessarily the same unit.

Statement of attainment

If you are awarded one or more nationally recognised units but not a full qualification, the RTO may issue a statement of attainment. It identifies the units awarded. As with other documents, do not assume the statement itself will explain that RPL was the assessment pathway; ask the RTO if you need that detail in writing.

USI VET transcript

Your Unique Student Identifier (USI) VET transcript is another place to check reported nationally recognised training. Depending on the information reported, it may display outcomes associated with RPL. It is not a substitute for checking the documents issued by your RTO, and recently completed training may not appear immediately. Does an RPL unit count differently?

RPL is an assessment process: the RTO considers evidence of skills and knowledge you already have against the requirements of a unit. If the RTO assesses you as competent and awards that unit, the unit is the nationally recognised unit identified by its code and title. RPL does not create a separate, lesser version of the unit.

There is, however, a difference between the unit awarded and the way the result is recorded. An RTO can record an RPL assessment outcome in its systems and report applicable training data, even if the qualification certificate does not display the assessment method. Also, RPL is not the same as credit transfer. Credit transfer generally recognises an equivalent unit you have already completed; RPL involves assessment of your existing skills and knowledge. If the distinction matters for an employer, licensing application or further study, ask the RTO how each outcome is shown on your records.

What should I ask before starting an RPL application?

If you need the qualification for licensing or another formal purpose, check the relevant authority’s requirements separately. An RTO assesses and issues VET credentials; a licensing body makes its own licensing decisions. Likewise, a qualification or RPL outcome does not guarantee a visa or migration result.
