Yes, cleaning professionals in Australia may be able to gain a nationally recognised qualification through recognition of prior learning (RPL). If you have developed skills on the job, RPL gives you a way to have those skills assessed against the requirements of a qualification. It is not an automatic certificate for years of service: you need to show what you can do, and a registered training organisation (RTO) decides whether your evidence meets the requirements.
How does RPL work for cleaners?
RPL is an assessment process that considers skills and knowledge gained through work, previous training and other relevant experience. For a cleaner, that experience might come from commercial cleaning, healthcare facilities, hospitality, schools, aged care or running a cleaning business.
The first step is choosing a qualification that fits your actual work. A Certificate III in Cleaning Operations may be relevant to some experienced cleaners, but the right option depends on your duties and goals. You can search the national register at training.gov.au to see current qualifications, units of competency and registered training providers. An RTO can explain which units apply and how it will assess them.
What cleaning experience could count?

What evidence might you need?
Useful evidence could include a résumé, position descriptions, rosters, payslips, employment records, work instructions, cleaning checklists, training records and references from supervisors or clients. If you run your own business, relevant records might include invoices, contracts, procedures and examples of the work you manage.
Evidence should help show what you did, how you did it and how recently you performed the work. Protect client and workplace privacy: remove personal or confidential details unless the RTO specifically needs them and you are permitted to share them. An assessor may also use an interview, practical demonstration or other assessment methods to check skills that documents alone cannot establish.
What if your evidence does not cover every unit?
You may still have options. The RTO might identify gaps that require further evidence, training or assessment before you can complete the qualification. Ask the provider what is involved, including fees and any practical assessment requirements, before you enrol or commit to a pathway.
Who decides whether you qualify?
Only an appropriately authorised RTO assesses your competence and issues an Australian-recognised qualification or statement of attainment. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) regulates many RTOs and provides information about vocational education and training quality.
