Documents that confirm your employment history, roles held, and the nature of your work. These form the backbone of most RPL applications because they establish that you have performed the tasks associated with the qualification.

Evidence of any structured learning you have undertaken during your career, whether formally accredited or not. This includes workplace-delivered training, short courses, seminars, and professional development activities.

Tangible outputs of your professional work that demonstrate what you can produce, create, or manage. These are especially powerful in industries where the quality of finished work is visible and measurable.

In some cases an RTO assessor may request direct observation of your skills in a workplace or simulated environment. Understanding what to expect helps you plan and prepare well in advance.

Evidence Questions Answered
Common questions about gathering, organising, and submitting evidence for your RPL application.
There is no fixed number of documents required. The goal is to provide enough evidence to demonstrate competency in each unit of the qualification. A good rule of thumb is at least two or three pieces of evidence per unit of competency. Quality and relevance matter more than volume. Our team will guide you on what is sufficient for your specific qualification.
This is very common. If employment records are unavailable, you can substitute with referee statements from former supervisors, bank statements showing employer payments, ATO income statements, or a statutory declaration. The RTO assessor is experienced in working with incomplete evidence portfolios and will advise on alternative approaches.
Yes, absolutely. You can draw evidence from multiple employers, roles, and industries as long as the skills demonstrated are relevant to the qualification units. Evidence from different contexts often strengthens your application by showing versatility and breadth of experience.
Both current and historical experience can be included. However, most RTOs prefer evidence from within the last three to five years as it demonstrates that your skills are current. Older evidence can still support your application, particularly for foundational competencies that do not change frequently.
Any evidence containing personal client, patient, or customer information must be de-identified before submission. This means removing or redacting names, addresses, identification numbers, and any other details that could identify a person. You may also need employer permission to use certain workplace documents.
The RTO may contact your employer to verify employment, request a third-party observation, or ask a supervisor to complete an assessment form. This usually happens with your knowledge and consent. If your current employment situation is sensitive, discuss this with us before submitting so we can guide you on the best approach.
Most RTOs accept scanned PDF documents, JPEG or PNG photos, and MP4 video files. Avoid submitting originals and always work from scans or certified copies. Documents should be legible, clearly labelled, and organised by evidence category. We recommend compiling everything into a structured folder before submission.
This is called a partial RPL outcome. The RTO will issue credit for the units where competency is demonstrated and may ask you to complete gap training for the remaining units. This still saves significant time and cost compared to enrolling in the full qualification from scratch.
Yes. Volunteer experience can be used as evidence if it involved the application of skills relevant to the qualification. You will need to provide confirmation of your voluntary role such as a letter from the organisation, a referee statement, or records of your activities, in the same way as paid employment.
