Recognition of Prior Learning

How RPL Works in Australia

You have already built valuable skills through years of work and life experience. RPL is the formal process that turns those skills into a nationally recognised qualification — without repeating training you have already done.

What Is RPL?

Your Experience Has Real Value

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process within the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). It acknowledges that learning does not only happen in a classroom. If you have been working in an industry for years, you already possess skills and knowledge that match formal qualification units.

Through RPL, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) assesses your evidence of competency and, if successful, issues you with a formal qualification — the same qualification earned by someone who completed full classroom or online training.

RPL Access Australia supports you through every step: from understanding your eligibility and gathering evidence, to connecting you with the right RTO for assessment.

RPL vs Traditional Training

✓ RPL

  • Based on your existing skills
  • No classroom attendance
  • Evidence-based assessment
  • Faster to complete
  • Lower cost
  • Same qualification outcome

→ Traditional Training

  • Learn from scratch
  • Scheduled classes or modules
  • Assignments and tests
  • Months or years
  • Higher time investment
  • Same qualification outcome

Identify the Right Qualification

Together we pinpoint the most suitable qualification for your career goals and experience level. We map your skills to the units of competency within the qualification so you know exactly what you need to demonstrate.

Gather Your Evidence

Evidence is the foundation of your RPL application. We provide a personalised checklist and help you collect the right documents — employment records, references, photos, work samples, licences, and more.

Submit to an RTO for Assessment

We connect you with a suitable Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that assesses your evidence against the qualification’s competency standards. The RTO may conduct a short interview or workplace observation if needed.

Receive Your Qualification

Once assessed as competent, the RTO issues your nationally recognised qualification. It is the same certificate awarded to someone who completed the full training course — and it is yours to keep forever.
