How RPL Works in Australia

RPL is a formal assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge you have already gained through work experience, training, or life experience. Instead of repeating learning you have already done, RPL allows you to demonstrate your existing competency and receive a formal qualification or partial credit toward one.

Any Australian worker or resident who has relevant work experience, on-the-job training, or informal learning may be eligible. There is no minimum age requirement. Typically, you need at least 1–2 years of hands-on experience in the area related to the qualification you are seeking.

Evidence can include payslips and employment records, references and employer statements, photos or videos of your work, licences and tickets, training records, work samples or portfolios, and any certificates from short courses. Our team helps you identify and organise the right evidence for your assessment.

The timeframe varies depending on the qualification and the RTO (Registered Training Organisation). In many cases, the RPL process can be completed in 4–12 weeks once your evidence is submitted. Preparation time depends on how quickly you can gather your supporting documents.

RPL fees vary between RTOs and qualifications. They are generally lower than enrolling in a full training course because you are not repeating prior learning. No. Credit transfer applies when you have already completed formal units of competency and want to use them toward a new qualification. RPL is for informal or non-formal learning — skills gained through work and life experience that have not been formally assessed before.

Yes. Qualifications issued through the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) by a registered RTO are nationally recognised across all states and territories in Australia. They carry the same value as qualifications obtained through standard classroom or online training.

Most vocational qualifications on the AQF can be achieved through RPL, including Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma level qualifications. Common areas include construction, aged care, business, hospitality, transport, community services, IT, and many more.

No. You can apply for RPL based on past work experience, even if you are not currently employed. As long as you can demonstrate the required skills and knowledge through evidence, your application can be assessed.
