If you are planning further vocational study, you may wonder whether your work experience can help you get started or reduce the training you need to complete. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) can help in some circumstances, but there is an important distinction: entry to a course and credit towards a course are separate decisions.
Can RPL count towards a vocational qualification?
Yes, potentially. RPL is an assessment process in which a registered training organisation (RTO) considers skills and knowledge you have gained through work, informal learning or other experience. If the evidence demonstrates that you meet the requirements of a unit of competency, the RTO may assess you as competent for that unit.
That outcome may count towards a qualification you are undertaking, subject to its current requirements and the RTO’s assessment processes. It is not an automatic exemption: the RTO must consider whether your evidence is sufficient, authentic, current and relevant. You may need to provide more evidence or complete training and assessment for any gaps.
You can look up nationally recognised qualifications and their units on the Australian Government’s training.gov.au register. Checking the units in the qualification you want to study is a useful first step because the units determine what your experience needs to demonstrate.
Does RPL give you entry to a course?
Not necessarily. A course may have entry requirements set out in its training product or additional enrolment conditions applied by the provider. Being experienced in an industry does not, by itself, mean you have met every requirement for admission. Likewise, receiving RPL for a unit does not automatically secure a place in another qualification.
Before enrolling, ask the prospective RTO two separate questions: Am I eligible to enter this course? and Can my existing skills or completed units count towards it? The answers may be different, and the RTO is the appropriate organisation to confirm both for the course it delivers.
RPL versus credit transfer: what is the difference?
The terms are often used together, but they describe different processes:
For example, a supervisor who has developed workplace skills without completing a related unit might ask about RPL. Someone who has already completed the same or an equivalent unit with another RTO might instead ask about credit transfer. If you have both formal training and substantial experience, the RTO can explain which process applies to each part of your study plan.
The Australian Qualifications Framework provides the national framework for Australian qualifications and pathways. Even so, it is important to discuss your particular qualification and circumstances with the provider rather than assume that credit will carry across automatically.
What evidence could help with an RPL assessment?
Useful evidence depends on the units you want assessed and the RTO’s requirements. It may include a work history, position descriptions, examples of completed work, records of relevant training, licences, workplace documents you are permitted to share, and statements from supervisors or clients. An assessor may also use an interview, practical demonstration or other assessment method.
Focus on what you personally did, how recently you did it and which unit requirements the evidence addresses. If a document contains confidential information, speak with the RTO about an appropriate way to present it rather than sharing it without permission.
How to plan your next step

The practical answer is that RPL may provide credit towards further vocational study when an RTO assesses you as competent in relevant units. Whether you can enter the course, how those units fit its requirements and what remains to be completed should all be confirmed with the prospective provider.
