If you have years of workplace experience, recognition of prior learning (RPL) may let you have your existing skills assessed against the requirements of an Australian qualification. But comparing RPL assessment fees is not as simple as choosing the lowest advertised price. Two quotes may cover different qualifications, evidence requirements and services.
The most useful question is: What will I pay for my circumstances, and what is included? Use the steps below to make a like-for-like comparison before you commit.
Start with the exact qualification
Ask each provider for the qualification’s full title and code, the name and RTO number of the registered training organisation (RTO) conducting the assessment, and confirmation that the qualification is on its scope of registration. You can check RTO and qualification details on the Australian Government’s training.gov.au register.
Compare quotes for the same qualification wherever possible. If one quote covers a different qualification or only selected units, the prices may not be comparable. Ask whether the quoted amount is for a full qualification, a skill set or individual units of competency.
Ask for an itemised written quote
Request the total price in writing, including whether GST applies. Then ask the provider to identify what is included and what could cost extra. Useful questions include:
Do not assume every extra cost will apply to you. The point is to understand which costs are fixed, which depend on your evidence and which arise only if additional work is needed.
Separate advisory support from RTO assessment
An RPL support service can help you understand a potential pathway and prepare or organise information for an application. The RTO is responsible for assessing your evidence against the relevant requirements and, where the requirements are met, issuing the qualification or statement of attainment. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) regulates RTOs in its jurisdiction and provides information about their obligations.
When you compare fees, ask exactly which organisation receives each payment and which organisation performs each service. RPL Access Australia provides pathway and application support; it does not make the RTO’s assessment decision or issue nationally recognised certificates. A support fee and an RTO assessment fee should not be mistaken for the same charge.
Compare what the assessment involves
RPL is an assessment process, not a certificate purchased for a fixed price. The RTO may ask for documents, examples of work, conversations about your experience or demonstrations of practical skills, depending on the qualification and your evidence.
Before accepting a quote, ask what evidence is likely to be needed and how the provider will tell you if your application is not yet ready. A lower upfront price may offer less assistance with organising evidence. A higher price may include services you do not need. Neither price alone tells you whether the option is suitable.
If someone says a qualification is guaranteed regardless of your evidence, ask how the RTO will assess you. Be cautious of promises about approval or completion by a particular date unless the provider can explain the conditions and what remains subject to assessment.
Check costs beyond the RPL quote
Think about your own time and any practical costs of collecting evidence, such as obtaining records or attending an assessment. If you need the qualification for an occupational licence, check the relevant licensing authority’s requirements and fees separately. A qualification obtained through RPL does not, by itself, guarantee a licence.
Likewise, if your goal relates to a visa or migration outcome, confirm the applicable requirements with the relevant government authority or an appropriately authorised adviser. An RTO’s assessment decision is separate from any migration decision.
Use a simple comparison checklist
Put each quote in a table with columns for the qualification code, RTO name and number, included services, upfront fee, possible extra fees, payment terms and refund terms. Add a final column for questions still unanswered. If a provider cannot explain an important charge, ask for clarification in writing before paying.
The cheapest quote is not necessarily the best fit. Choose a quote you understand, from an RTO you can check, for an assessment process that suits your experience and evidence.
