In Australian vocational education and training, Recognition of Prior Learning is an assessment pathway, not a separate qualification type. If an authorised Registered Training Organisation assesses you as competent and issues a full qualification, the testamur normally identifies the qualification, learner and issuing RTO. It is not generally required to place a special “obtained through RPL” label on the qualification title.

However, the RTO must document and report how each unit was achieved. A provider transcript, record of results, student portal or USI VET transcript may identify units granted through RPL. The precise wording and layout can vary by provider and record type.

Usually, the main qualification certificate identifies the qualification awarded. It is not a separate “RPL certificate” and may not state the pathway used to achieve each unit.

Record of results or provider transcript

TAFE NSW states that successful RPL applicants receive a transcript showing the RPL granted. TAFE Queensland’s published rules say its record of results includes competent, credit-transfer and RPL grades.

USI VET transcript

RTOs must report RPL outcomes to national VET data collections. The national outcome code for successful RPL is “51—Recognition of prior learning granted”. Information reported for individual units may appear on the learner’s USI VET transcript.

Statement of attainment

A statement of attainment certifies one or more units rather than a complete qualification. Its related record or result information may show that RPL was granted.

The best approach is to ask the issuing RTO which documents it provides and how RPL results appear.

What is the difference between a testamur and a transcript?

These documents serve different purposes.

Why the main certificate may not mention RPL

The Australian Qualifications Framework sets requirements for qualification certification. A VET qualification normally identifies matters such as:

• Graduate’s name
• Qualification code and title
• Issuing organisation
• RTO registration code
• Date of issue
• Authorised signatory
• Required AQF wording
• Nationally Recognised Training logo where applicable

The certificate confirms that the graduate achieved the qualification’s outcomes. RPL is one possible route to that achievement.

National VET reporting

NCVER guidance requires RTOs to report successful RPL using outcome code 51 for the relevant unit or module. If RPL is granted for a whole qualification, each component achieved through RPL is reported accordingly.

USI VET transcript

Reported training activity may be displayed through the USI transcript service. Timing depends on the RTO’s reporting cycle, and recently completed training may not appear immediately.

Will an employer know I used RPL?

Not automatically from seeing only the qualification testamur.

An employer may learn that RPL was used if:

• You tell them
• You provide a record of results showing RPL
• You share a USI VET transcript showing the outcome
• The employer verifies records with your permission
• The role’s application process asks about training or assessment history

A valid qualification retains the same formal status when the same training product has been properly assessed and issued. Employers may still consider work history, recent experience, references, electives, practical ability and licences.

Be accurate when answering direct questions. Do not conceal information where disclosure is required by law, regulation, contract or a professional body.

Can I choose what appears on my USI VET transcript?

You cannot alter legitimate training outcomes simply because you prefer different wording.

You can control access to your transcript. The USI service states that nobody can view it without your permission. When sharing, you may be able to provide a complete transcript or select particular training to display.

If information is missing or incorrect, contact the issuing RTO. The RTO is responsible for correcting its reported training data where appropriate.

Do not ask a provider to report an RPL unit as ordinary training if that is not what occurred. National reporting must accurately reflect the outcome.

Does an RPL grade reduce the qualification’s value?

No. An RPL result records the assessment pathway; it does not create a lower version of the unit.

A qualified assessor must still determine that you meet the training product requirements. Genuine RPL uses evidence that is:

• Valid
• Sufficient
• Authentic
• Current

ASQA requires RPL decisions to be fair, documented and consistent with the RTO’s assessment system. The assessment must preserve the integrity of the qualification.

Will the certificate say “RPL qualification”?
