If you received a qualification through recognition of prior learning (RPL), you may want to check that it is nationally recognised. The key distinction is this: Australia’s national register can help you check the qualification and the registered training organisation (RTO), but it does not provide a public search for an individual’s certificate.
What can I check on the national register?
training.gov.au is the national register for vocational education and training (VET). You can search it for a qualification code and title, as well as the RTO that issued your certificate. It also shows information about an RTO’s registration and scope of registration.
Start with the exact qualification code printed on your certificate. Search for that code, then compare the title with your document. Next, search the issuing RTO by its name or RTO number. Check the organisation’s record and whether the relevant qualification appears in its scope information. Pay attention to dates: a current listing alone may not answer whether the RTO was authorised to issue that qualification when your certificate was awarded.
A qualification may have been superseded since you received it. If the current code differs from the one on your certificate, look at the historical record rather than assuming the older award is invalid.
Can the register verify that my certificate is genuine?
Not by itself. Finding a qualification and an RTO on the register does not prove that a named person completed an assessment or was issued a particular certificate. The register lists training products and providers; it is not a public database of graduates.
It also generally will not tell you whether a person gained a qualification through RPL or classroom-based training. RPL is an assessment pathway: an RTO assesses a person’s existing skills and knowledge against the relevant requirements. Where those requirements are met, the RTO—not an RPL support service—issues the appropriate certification.
How do I check my own VET record?
If you have a Unique Student Identifier (USI), sign in through the official USI website and review your USI VET transcript. It brings together nationally recognised VET training reported against your USI, generally from 2015 onwards. Compare the reported qualification, issuing RTO and completion details with your certificate.
A transcript may not contain every record you expect. Older training, reporting delays or data issues can affect what appears. If a qualification is missing or a detail looks wrong, contact the issuing RTO and ask it to check its records and reporting. Do not treat a missing transcript entry, on its own, as proof that a certificate is invalid.
If an employer or another organisation needs evidence, ask what form of verification it accepts. You may be able to share your USI VET transcript through the official USI service, provide your certificate, or authorise the issuing RTO to confirm your award. Avoid sharing your USI login details.
What if the details do not match?
For a licence or registration, check separately with the relevant licensing body. A nationally recognised qualification does not automatically grant a licence. Likewise, any migration or visa assessment is a separate decision made by the responsible authority.
