If you've spent years installing, servicing, or repairing air conditioning and refrigeration systems, you may already have the skills and experience needed for formal recognition — without sitting through classroom training you don't need.
This RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) pathway is designed for people already working hands-on in air conditioning and refrigeration who want their real-world skills matched against a nationally recognised qualification.
RPL Access Australia is an independent consulting and student support service. We are not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) — we help you prepare and present your evidence, then connect you with a partner RTO who makes the formal assessment and issues any qualification outcome.
What This Pathway Recognises
Air conditioning and refrigeration work is highly practical, and many technicians build strong capability through years of on-the-job experience, informal training, and supervised work rather than a classroom. This pathway is built around recognising that real-world capability.
Who This Pathway Suits
- Air conditioning and refrigeration installers and service technicians
- Split system and ducted system installers
- Commercial and industrial refrigeration mechanics
- HVAC maintenance and breakdown technicians
- Tradespeople who have worked under supervision without completing formal training
- Workers with overseas trade experience seeking Australian recognition
What The Pathway Covers
- Installing and commissioning air conditioning and refrigeration equipment
- Fault-finding, servicing and repairing systems
- Working safely with refrigerants and pressure systems
- Reading and applying wiring diagrams and technical specifications
- Complying with workplace health and safety requirements on site
- Testing, evacuating, charging and decommissioning systems
How The RPL Process Works
- Tell us about your experience — a short conversation or questionnaire about your work history, roles and responsibilities.
- Prepare your evidence — we help you gather documents, photos, references and records that demonstrate your skills.
- Connect with the RTO — your evidence is submitted to a partner Registered Training Organisation for formal assessment.
- Receive your outcome — the RTO determines whether your experience meets the requirements, and advises on any gap training needed.
Why RPL Beats Repeating Training
Many experienced technicians have already mastered the practical skills taught in a full qualification. Repeating training you don't need costs time and money. RPL allows your existing skills and work history to be formally assessed, potentially fast-tracking your qualification and saving you from sitting through content you've already mastered on the job.
Career Outcomes
Formal recognition can support licensing requirements, help you meet compliance obligations for refrigerant handling, strengthen job applications, and open pathways to supervisory or higher-paying roles within the HVAC&R industry.
Evidence You May Need
RPL assessment is conducted by an RTO. The following types of evidence are commonly discussed during RPL support consultations.
To support your RPL application, you'll typically need to gather evidence that demonstrates your real-world experience. Common documents include:
- Photo identification
- Resume or CV outlining your work history
- Employer reference letters confirming your duties and experience
- Payslips, rosters, or employment contracts
- Relevant certificates or training records you already hold
- Your Unique Student Identifier (USI) — required for any nationally recognised qualification
- Photos and videos of your work activities, such as installations, servicing tasks or equipment you've worked on
The more evidence you can provide, the easier it is for the assessing RTO to map your experience against the qualification requirements.
