Tiling RPL is how experienced tilers turn real, on-the-tools trade experience into a nationally recognised, Certificate III-level outcome — without repeating an apprenticeship for skills you've already mastered.
If you're already preparing surfaces, installing floor and wall tiles, applying waterproofing, tiling curved surfaces, laying decorative or mosaic tiling, or repairing existing tiling on residential or commercial projects, much of what you already do lines up with the units assessed through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Instead of completing a multi-year apprenticeship, RPL lets a partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO) assess your existing evidence against those units.
RPL Access Australia isn't an RTO. We help you check whether RPL in wall and floor tiling fits your background, build a strong evidence portfolio, and liaise with a suitable RTO for formal assessment. In most Australian states and territories, this trade-level qualification is a key step toward tiling contractor licensing, though you should always confirm the exact requirements with your local building or fair trading regulator. Tiling RPL looks at real-world trade skills, not just certificates. Assessors are typically interested in evidence of:
- Reading and interpreting plans and specifications for tiling work
- Preparing surfaces and handling and storing tiling materials
- Installing floor tiles and wall tiles, including decorative and mosaic tiling
- Tiling curved surfaces and applying waterproofing to wet areas
- Repairing existing wall and floor tiling
- Working safely and following levelling and finishing procedures

Evidence You May Need
RPL assessment is conducted by an RTO. The following types of evidence are commonly discussed during RPL support consultations.
Every RPL application runs on evidence, not classroom hours. For a Tiling RPL application, you'll typically want to gather:
- Photo ID (for the RTO's 100-point identity check)
- An up-to-date resume or CV covering your relevant roles
- Reference letters from employers, builders, or clients verifying your tiling work
- Payslips, contracts, or ABN and invoicing records confirming your trade work
- Photos or videos of completed tiling work (floors, walls, wet areas, decorative or mosaic tiling)
- Any partial trade qualifications, apprenticeship records, or overseas trade certificates
- Any existing tickets or cards relevant to site safety
- Your Unique Student Identifier (USI), or the details to create one via the USI portal
