RPL for Trainers and Assessors

Turn your real-world training experience into a nationally recognised qualification

If you already design, deliver or assess training in a workplace, RTO, community setting or industry environment, you may already have the skills that a formal Training and Assessment qualification recognises. This RPL pathway is designed for experienced trainers, assessors, workplace supervisors, subject matter experts and industry specialists who want a nationally recognised credential without starting from scratch.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows your existing knowledge and hands-on experience to be assessed against the required competency standards, rather than requiring you to sit through content you've already mastered on the job.

RPL Access Australia is an independent RPL consulting and student support service. We are not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) — we help you prepare a strong application and evidence portfolio, then connect you with a partner RTO who makes the final assessment and issues any qualification outcome.

What This RPL Pathway Covers

This pathway is built around the real-world duties of trainers and assessors, not around a list of unit codes. It's designed to recognise practical experience in designing, delivering, facilitating and assessing training in workplace, vocational or community settings.

Who This Pathway Suits

  • Workplace supervisors or team leaders who regularly train, coach or induct staff
  • Subject matter experts who deliver internal training or toolbox talks
  • Assessors working informally within a workplace or industry setting
  • Community trainers, facilitators or industry presenters
  • People who have delivered training under supervision but lack a formal credential
  • Existing trainers seeking to formalise or update their qualification

What This Pathway Recognises

  • Designing and customising training sessions or resources for a target audience
  • Delivering structured training to individuals or groups
  • Facilitating group-based learning and managing group dynamics
  • Planning and conducting assessments, including gathering and judging evidence
  • Providing constructive feedback to learners and recording outcomes
  • Applying legal and ethical responsibilities within a training and assessment environment

How the RPL Process Works

  1. Tell us about your experience — share your training, coaching, facilitation or assessment background with our team.
  2. Prepare your evidence — we help you organise documentation and real examples that reflect your day-to-day skills.
  3. Connect with our partner RTO — your evidence portfolio is reviewed by a Registered Training Organisation for formal assessment.
  4. Receive your outcome — the RTO determines whether you meet the requirements for the full qualification, or identifies any gaps to address.

Why RPL Beats Repeating Study

If you're already training or assessing others in a genuine capacity, sitting through a full course can mean relearning skills you use every week. RPL respects the experience you've already built, saving time and cost while still leading to a nationally recognised outcome assessed by a qualified RTO.

Career Outcomes

A recognised Training and Assessment qualification can support roles such as corporate trainer, RTO assessor, workplace trainer, compliance trainer, apprenticeship mentor, or industry facilitator — helping you formalise skills you may already be using informally.

Evidence You May Need

RPL assessment is conducted by an RTO. The following types of evidence are commonly discussed during RPL support consultations.

Every RPL application is different, but most trainers and assessors typically gather a combination of the following:

  • Photo ID
  • Resume or CV outlining your training and assessment history
  • Employer or client reference letters confirming your training/assessment duties
  • Payslips, rosters, contracts or session schedules showing relevant work
  • Relevant certificates or training records (workshops, short courses, inductions)
  • Your Unique Student Identifier (USI) — you can create or find yours at usi.gov.au
  • Sample training materials, session plans or assessment tools you've developed or used

Our team will guide you on exactly what's realistic and relevant to include based on your specific background.
