Can skills gained on a working holiday visa be recognised through RPL?

· 4 min read · working holiday visa RPL

Yes. Skills gained while working in Australia on a working holiday visa may be considered through recognition of prior learning (RPL). The important question is not which visa you held when you learned the skills, but whether you can show an RTO that you meet the requirements of a particular Australian qualification or unit of competency.

How does RPL work for working holiday experience?

RPL is an assessment process that considers skills and knowledge gained through work, training and other experience. A registered training organisation (RTO) compares your evidence with the requirements of the relevant units and decides whether you have demonstrated competency. You can explore qualifications and their units on the Australian Government’s National Register of VET, while the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) provides information about regulation of vocational education and training.

For example, a working holiday maker might have developed relevant skills in hospitality, agriculture, construction or another workplace. That experience does not automatically count as credit towards a qualification. The RTO must assess the actual tasks performed, the level of responsibility, the evidence available and how well those skills match the units being assessed.

What evidence should you keep?

Start gathering records while you can still contact your employer and access workplace documents. Depending on the qualification and the RTO’s assessment requirements, useful evidence may include:

  • Position descriptions, contracts and employment records showing your role and dates of work.
  • Detailed references or supervisor statements explaining the tasks you performed and how independently you performed them.
  • De-identified work samples, job sheets, rosters or project records, where you have permission to share them.
  • Records of workplace training, inductions and relevant licences or tickets.
  • Evidence of more recent work if your working holiday experience was some time ago.

Keep client, employer and colleague information confidential. A payslip may help establish that you worked somewhere, but it usually says little about whether you can perform a specific workplace task. An RTO may also use an interview, practical demonstration or other assessment methods to confirm your skills.

Does the type of visa affect RPL eligibility?

Having held a working holiday visa does not, by itself, prove or rule out competency. An RTO should explain its enrolment requirements, the qualification’s assessment requirements, fees and any identification requirements before you proceed. If you are applying for a nationally recognised VET qualification in Australia, you may also need a Unique Student Identifier; check the official USI website for current requirements.

Your visa conditions are a separate matter. Work rights and conditions can differ by visa and circumstance, so check your own grant details and current guidance from the Department of Home Affairs. An RPL assessment does not extend your stay, change your work rights or determine a visa outcome.

What if my experience covers only part of a qualification?

That is still worth discussing with an RTO. Your evidence might support assessment for some units but not others. Where gaps remain, the RTO can explain whether further training or assessment is needed. The outcome, cost and time involved depend on the qualification, your evidence and the RTO’s process; no particular result or timeframe is guaranteed.

For regulated work, a qualification is not necessarily the same as a licence or permission to perform the work. The relevant licensing authority makes licensing decisions under its own rules. Likewise, a migration or skills-assessment decision belongs to the responsible authority, not the RTO or an RPL adviser.

Where should you start?

Write down the jobs you held, the tasks you performed and the qualification you hope to pursue. Then ask an RTO that offers that qualification what evidence it needs and how it assesses each unit. RPL Access Australia can help you understand the RPL pathway and organise information for an enquiry; it does not assess competency, issue certificates, grant licences or decide visa matters. The assessment and any resulting qualification are the RTO’s responsibility.

If you are still travelling, save permitted records and supervisor contact details now. Clear, specific evidence will give an assessor a better picture of what you can actually do than a job title alone.
