Can an assessor contact my current or previous employer?

· 3 min read · RPL assessor contact employer

One of the most common questions people ask before starting a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application is whether an assessor will contact their current or previous employer. It's a fair concern — many applicants worry about privacy, workplace relationships, or simply don't want their employer involved. This article explains how employer contact typically fits into the RPL assessment process, and who is actually responsible for making that decision.

Who Makes the Decision — the RTO, Not RPL Access

It's important to be clear about roles. RPL Access provides support and advisory services to help you prepare, organise, and present your evidence for an RPL application. We do not conduct assessments, issue qualifications, or contact employers on behalf of an assessor. That responsibility sits entirely with the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) assessing your application.

Each RTO operates under the Standards for RTOs set by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), which requires assessment decisions to be valid, sufficient, current, and authentic. Contacting an employer, where it occurs, is one of several tools an assessor may use to help verify the authenticity of evidence — not a guaranteed or automatic step in every application.

Why an Assessor Might Seek Employer Verification

RPL assessment relies on evidence that demonstrates you already hold the skills and knowledge required for a qualification, mapped against units of competency listed on the training.gov.au national register. To confirm this evidence is genuine and reflects your actual work, an assessor may use methods such as:

  • Written referee or supervisor reports
  • Third-party verification statements included with your evidence portfolio
  • A phone call or email to confirm dates of employment or duties performed
  • Workplace observation or practical demonstration, in some cases

Whether any of these methods are used — and to what extent — depends on the RTO's own assessment strategy, the qualification involved, and the quality of the evidence you've already provided.

Do You Need Your Employer's Permission?

If an RTO does decide to seek employer verification, this is typically done with your knowledge, and often you are asked to nominate a workplace referee yourself rather than the assessor contacting anyone unannounced. Many applicants use former employers, supervisors, or long-term clients as referees precisely because current employer contact isn't always required or preferred.

If privacy is a concern, it's worth raising this directly with the RTO handling your assessment before submitting your application, as processes can vary between providers.

How Strong Evidence Can Reduce Reliance on Employer Contact

Generally speaking, the more thorough and well-organised your evidence portfolio is, the less an assessor may need to seek additional third-party verification. This can include:

  • Detailed work samples and project documentation
  • Photos or records of tasks performed, where appropriate
  • Training records, licences, or prior certifications
  • Clear, well-mapped statements addressing relevant units of competency

This is where preparation matters. Through our RPL pathways guidance, we help applicants understand what evidence RTOs commonly look for, so your portfolio is as complete and well-organised as possible before it reaches an assessor.

Getting Started

If you're unsure what evidence to gather or how the RPL process works for your industry, our team can help you understand the general pathway before you commit to an RTO. Please note: RPL Access does not perform assessments, issue certificates, or make decisions on behalf of any RTO, licensing body, or immigration authority. All assessment methods, including any employer contact, are determined solely by the RTO managing your application.
