Yes, gap training can sometimes be completed with the same registered training organisation (RTO) that conducts your recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment. It is not automatic, though. The RTO needs to offer suitable training for the skills you still need to develop, and you should understand any additional costs, time commitments and assessment requirements before proceeding.
How does gap training fit with RPL?
RPL is an assessment process that considers skills and knowledge you have already gained through work, previous training or other relevant experience. An RTO assessor reviews your evidence against the requirements of the units you are seeking. They may find that you meet some requirements but still need to develop or demonstrate others.
Gap training is learning directed at those identified gaps. It might involve guided study, practical training, supervised activities or workplace practice, depending on the unit and the RTO’s arrangements. Completing training does not, by itself, mean you have passed a unit. The RTO must still assess whether you meet all applicable requirements before it can issue a result or qualification.

Can you stay with the same RTO?

But an RTO that offers RPL assessment will not necessarily offer every type of gap training you need. Availability may depend on its approved scope of registration, delivery methods, trainers, equipment, placement arrangements and enrolment conditions. The RTO should explain what it can provide and how any further assessment will work.
It is also possible to undertake relevant learning with another provider. Before doing so, ask the assessing RTO what evidence it would accept and whether formal results from another RTO could be considered for credit transfer. Do not assume that attending a course elsewhere will automatically satisfy the outstanding unit requirements.

Who makes the final decision?
The RTO makes assessment decisions and, where all requirements are met, issues the relevant nationally recognised certification.
