You have experience, you have evidence, and you are ready to ask about recognition of prior learning (RPL). Then a question comes up: will a practical assessment or gap training cost extra?
It might. There is no single fee structure that applies to every RPL application. The cost depends on the qualification, the registered training organisation (RTO), the assessment required and what your existing skills and evidence can demonstrate. The safest approach is to ask for an itemised written quote before you commit.
What does an RPL fee usually cover?
RPL is an assessment process that considers skills and knowledge gained through work, previous training and other experience against the requirements of a qualification or unit. An RTO decides what evidence is needed, conducts the assessment and, where requirements are met, issues the relevant certification. You can check qualifications, units and RTO details on the Australian Government’s training.gov.au register.
A quoted RPL fee may cover an initial review, evidence assessment and the RTO’s assessment decision. It may not cover every activity that becomes necessary later. Ask the provider to identify exactly what is included, what could trigger another charge and who would charge it.
Can a practical assessment cost extra?
Yes, depending on the RTO’s fee structure. An assessor may need to observe you performing a task or otherwise verify practical skills. This does not automatically mean there will be a separate charge: the practical component may already be included in the quoted assessment fee.
Where it is charged separately, possible costs include:
- an assessor’s additional time or travel;
- access to a workplace, venue or equipment;
- materials or consumables used during the task; and
- another assessment opportunity if further evidence is needed.
Practical requirements vary by unit and qualification. Before paying, ask what practical tasks may be required, where they would take place, what you must provide and whether the quoted price includes them.
Is gap training included in RPL?
Not necessarily. Gap training is learning undertaken to address skills or knowledge you cannot yet demonstrate to the required standard. It is different from assessment: assessment determines whether you meet the requirements, while training helps you develop skills or knowledge that are missing.
If an RTO identifies a gap, you should be told what the gap is, which unit requirements it relates to, what options are available and what each option costs. Depending on the circumstances, you might choose further training, gain more experience or provide additional evidence if you already have the relevant skills but have not yet demonstrated them adequately. Do not assume every request for more evidence means you need to buy a course.
Other costs worth checking
Practical assessments and gap training are not the only possible additions. Depending on the provider and your circumstances, you may need to budget for documents, translations, travel, equipment or fees associated with a separate licensing process. Ask whether the quote covers all units you are seeking and whether fees differ if you apply for only part of a qualification.
RPL, a qualification and an occupational licence are separate matters. An RTO makes the assessment and certification decision. A relevant licensing body decides whether its licensing requirements are met; an RPL outcome does not guarantee a licence. Likewise, any visa or migration decision belongs to the responsible government authority, not an RPL adviser or RTO.
Questions to ask before you pay
Request the answers in writing so you can compare options and refer back to them if your assessment needs change:
- Which qualification or units are included in the quote?
- Is a practical assessment included? If not, what is its price or how will the price be calculated?
- Could assessor travel, equipment, venue hire or consumables be charged separately?
- Is any gap training included? If not, will you receive a separate quote before choosing whether to enrol?
- What happens if you need to submit more evidence or undertake further assessment?
- What are the payment stages, cancellation conditions and refund terms?
