Alcohol and Other Drugs RPL is how experienced AOD workers turn real, on-the-job experience into a nationally recognised, Diploma-level outcome — without sitting through training you've already mastered in the field.
If you've been conducting assessments, developing and reviewing treatment plans, delivering advanced interventions, supporting relapse prevention, or working with clients who have co-existing mental health needs, much of what you already do lines up with the units assessed through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Instead of starting a course from scratch, RPL lets a partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO) assess your existing evidence against those units.
RPL Access Australia isn't an RTO. We help you check whether RPL in alcohol and other drugs fits your background, build a strong evidence portfolio, and liaise with a suitable RTO for formal assessment. If your background is broader across mental health or community services, our Mental Health RPL pathway may also be worth a look.
Who Alcohol and Other Drugs RPL Suits
This RPL pathway is built for people already working at a specialist or senior level supporting people affected by substance use, including:
- AOD community support workers and outreach officers
- Case managers in drug and alcohol treatment services
- Residential rehabilitation or withdrawal support workers
- Workers delivering counselling or group interventions in AOD services
- Certificate IV-qualified AOD workers ready to step up to Diploma level
If you're already assessing client needs, planning treatment, or supporting relapse prevention, you likely have more evidence than you realise.
What This RPL Pathway Recognises
Alcohol and other drugs RPL looks at the practical, day-to-day skills behind the job title, not just your resume. Assessors are typically interested in evidence of:
- Facilitating a comprehensive AOD assessment
- Developing, implementing, and reviewing treatment plans
- Delivering advanced AOD interventions and counselling techniques
- Supporting clients with co-existing mental health and AOD issues
- Working effectively in trauma-informed care
- Facilitating relapse prevention and recovery planning
How the RPL Process Works
- Tell us your experience — share your work history and the pathway you're interested in so we can sanity-check your eligibility.
- Prepare your evidence — we help you pull together the documents, references, and work samples that map to each unit.
- Connect with an RTO — we liaise with a suitable partner RTO who assesses your evidence against the qualification requirements.
- Receive your outcome — you get sign-off where you're already competent, plus clear next steps for any gaps.
You can read a full breakdown of this process on our How RPL Works page, or browse other options on RPL Pathways.
Why RPL Beats Repeating Study
Most AOD workers we speak with already have the skills — what they're missing is the paperwork. Alcohol and Other Drugs RPL means:
- No repeating units you've already mastered in the field
- A faster, evidence-based path to a Diploma-level outcome
- Keeping your current role and income while you go through assessment
- A qualification that's genuinely nationally recognised once issued by our partner RTO
Evidence You May Need
RPL assessment is conducted by an RTO. The following types of evidence are commonly discussed during RPL support consultations.
Every RPL application runs on evidence, not classroom hours. For an Alcohol and Other Drugs RPL application, you'll typically want to gather:
- Photo ID (for the RTO's 100-point identity check)
- An up-to-date resume or CV covering your relevant roles
- Position descriptions or duty statements confirming senior or specialised duties
- Employment contracts, payslips, or rosters confirming your role and timeframe
- Reference letters from supervisors or clinical team leaders verifying the duties you performed
- De-identified case notes, treatment plans, or reports you contributed to (with all client details removed)
- Any relevant training certificates (e.g. motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care)
- Your Unique Student Identifier (USI), or the details to create one via the USI portal
We put together a tailored checklist for your specific role after your eligibility check — you can see the general version on our RPL Evidence Checklist page.
How RPL Access Australia Can Help
Once you start your Alcohol and Other Drugs RPL check, RPL Access Australia stays with you through the whole process:
- We review your work history and flag whether this pathway — or a related one on our RPL Pathways page — is the better fit
- We hand you a tailored evidence checklist so you know exactly what to collect and why it matters
- We check your evidence for completeness before it goes to assessment, so you're not sending an RTO an incomplete file
- We liaise directly with our partner RTO on your behalf while you keep working
- If gaps are identified, we explain your options in plain language — usually short, targeted gap tasks rather than starting over
